WIKI-BLOG-BLOG-WIKI

I'm at the WIKI-BLOG training at Pat May - until 6:30tonight. But at least I know what she's talking about. I feel so empowered!

THE END. FINAL. Am I smiling?

I think I'm about done, but I will need our fearless leader to check all my work! About this course. . .

What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?

  • My favorite thing was the fish gadget. I want to put it on my computer for my screen saver or desktop or wall art.
  • I already knew that I work better with a partner. I'm glad I have a friend who loves to do stuff on the computer! I needed her to talk me through a few things. Then, like the good teacher she is, I had to go back and do it myself. That worked about 90% of the time.
  • Setting up the blog was interesting. Now I'm signed up for the blog thing from the district (March 24) so I can figure out how to do one on my web page so kids can discuss the books. At least I know a little more about it now.

How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?

  • There are some kinds of things I don't want to learn first hand. I've read and seen TV show about all the evil on the Internet. I know that kids can get into things without meaning to. There were things I didn't want to see or know that I got to see. I saw things by clicking NEXT BLOG that broke my heart. So how has this affected my lifelong learning goals? I want to preach Internet safety to everyone, all the time. I DO want to keep apprised of the up & coming things out there, but I'd rather be shown those that are appropriate for elementary than explore all the world out there. It scares me!

Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?

  • I've never blogged before. I don't 'journal' except for an occasional prayer journal. I hate to write. Always have. So, I'm taking away the verification that writing on the Internet--blogging-- is just as awful for me as writing on paper! I guess I'm not surprised, but I really don't want to read anyone else's blog either. When I do a google search about son's movie, there are all these blog entries. It's not that I don't want to hear what the "common man" is saying, but I guess I really don't. Am I an awful person???

  • I'm surprised that so many people have nothing better to do that to blog about the mundane things of life. I feel sorry that they don't have more contact with living breathing people. BUT, it is a great tool for long distance communication! Wish is was available for UNT group projects

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?

  • I will guess I agree with Debe that more feedback would be welcomed. I know Kiera reads our stuff (she has to) and on one hand, I'm glad no ones else reads mine (except Debe), but it would be nice if 1 or 2 others commented on the blogs. I've tried to go in a couple of times a week and comment on somebody's blog - even when Kiera didn't tell us to. It was helpful when we'd get a message in the email (which we see all day long) that someone was having a problem with something. It's nice to know others needed extra help! And when then those who COULD do it chimed in, I knew who to contact to get help.

  • The format is fine. I did online masters from UNT, so this concept is not new to me. And I had to PAY for the UNT one. And will be paying right up into the grave. I'm glad we had lots of time to do it and not a 2-3 week course.

And last but not least… If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again chose to participate?

I probably will. Bribes always help. Will I enjoy it? I don't know. I've taken the FLIP VIDEO class 2.5 times and still aren't any good at it. I think I'm becoming technically challenged. Yes, I need to challenge to keep my old brain going.

NetLibrary

I finally got registered through the the LDB site, but of course can't get to it from school (NetLibrary) so will have to go home to do it. I've never downloaded an audio anything. Hubby & sons do music, but I don't have a computer in our bedroom, so it wouldn't do me any good. Computer is in "Garry's room" (computer/file cabinet/ his clothes) so his music is always playing. I love it when the dog leaves his room and comes in with me. Very discriminating taste!

My MP3 problem will be finding earphones that fit me. Garry has some that go over his ears, but his ears are huge and they just fall off me - the plugs, not his ears. The big kind that fit over your head make it difficult to move around in - cleaning, etc. The kind that fit IN my ear are usually too big. I have lovely, dainty ears. But I'm will to try it when I get my free'cuzIdidthisclass MP3 player!

NET LIBRARY ???

Well, I tried. It says to see my librarian. But I AM my librarian. I will try from school tomorrow.

I don't have an MP3 player or anything else to download on, so can't do that part anyway. I do listen to audiobooks a lot: in the car, while knitting, crafting, or anything I don't have to THINK too hard about. I couldn't listen to one while doing this stuff!

till tomorrow. . . .

HARRY POTTER PODCAST

I love HP books. I'm still having withdrawal. Will have to read the last one again this summer. I added this to my RSS feeds. I'll check it out longer if we're snowed in again and I DON'T loose power this time. Interesting to listen to others talk about movie vs books. But, didn't have 20+ minutes to finish it.

I checked out other podcasts. Once again, I saw things I didn't want to see. I looked at FOOD and there was a lady in a black bra. I don't own a black bra. I really didn't want to see hers.

This is one of those things - like YouTube- that I only go to when someone I KNOW (and knows me) sends me one or tells me to go look at a specific one.

Maybe the rapture will come and I won't have to know all this :0)

The K-Swiss Ping Pong Challenge

This took place in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival. My son, Tony (Anthony Burns) won the tournament. Someone - K-Swiss I guess- made this video. It's pretty good!

I do love YouTube, but I don't spend much time there. I could be hooked!

UPCOMING Web 2.0 winner

This was interesting. It told me everything (I guess) that is going on around here. You can choose comedy, education, family, festivals, mustic, social, sports and many more. I like the fact that I could choose TODAY or RECENTLY ADDED. I found out there was a Maverick game tonight without looking for the TV guide. If I hadn't been working at 11:00 today, I could have watched the sloths being fed at the Dallas World Aquarium. Why are they feeding sloths at the aquarium? Are they going to feed them to the sharks at 2L00?

Lots of choices for these "winners" for those who like to sit in front of the computer. To think, people actually get paid to sit around and figure all this out. My mind is boggled.

ZOHO-HO-HO

This would have come in really handy when I started my UNT library stuff. I had a IMAC and had to do stuff in WORD. Actually, I could, but with a ZOHO site, I could have used that and loaded to UNT. It also would come in handy - kind of like WIKIs- for working on a joint project.

Hmmmmm. I'll have to think on this more.

delicious - yummy

I delicioused. When your computer crashes, as they all do, it will be nice to have a place to go and find my book marks. I need to show this to Garry, 'cuz he has 43 million things bookmarked and it drives me crazy! With his dyslexia, he can't read the whole list without a break!

Oh, no. ZOHO

Four score and seven years ago. . . That's how long this assignment is going to take!yell

WIKI THIS

Ok. Wiki is just a wesite that anyone can add to. I get it. But, same problem with all this, to me, is that anyone can change things. I like the little video about the wiki for a group to use (instead of email) to plan a trip. This would be great for any of us when we plan a get together, or trip, or author signing, or conference.

I looked at several library ones and was just a normal library site with links, except I guess I could have added my 2 cents worth.

I might like a private wiki for a group of students to talk about a book or project. This would have been really useful when doing online courses at UNT!

I'm still learning about all this. I just don't like spending my time in front of a computer. It doesn't smile at me or tell me I'm cute. . .

Library 2.0 - It's many things to many people.

Yes, it scares me. I'm a people person. Touch something person. I know kids and adults who don't have much human contact because you can do everything on the web. In 50 years (or less) you won't need us. We'll be "virtual." Hope I'm skinny. But I do love online catalogs and search engines like NetTrekker that help us teach the kids how to find things.

I do believe, as elementary librarians, it affects us differently. Kids still need to learn about books, how to find something without a "tag" and what to do when there is no technology due to a natural disaster.

After 7 years as librarian, I can not count the times the internet was down or the computers just wouldn't work. I have been without power for up to 72 hours - no cell, no A/C, no heat (no hot water!) and NO computer or TV. I was able to read and play board games with my kids by the light of the fire and/or rechargable lantern-charged by car battery!

So, I'm learning and absorbing as much as my little red-headed brain can!

WHY ALL THESE SITES BOTHER ME

One of the main reasons I have never (and will not be doing again) gone to all these sites is because of what happened to Angela with Rollyo. I do NOT want to register and give my name and birthday to all this cyber people, yet we are having to do that. When I go to a site I'm interested in, if it asks for more than my name and email, I just decline.

YOU can have my birthday and know my age - that's not the problem, but it's too easy for people to access account info, etc., with that.

That's my 2 cents.

ROLLYO WON'T ROLL

I keep trying to ROLLYO but it won't connect. Says too many connections. So I'm skipping and see if I can come back to this. Maybe Friday night is a big rollyo time. Why aren't they at the movies or sitting on the couch knitting?

LIBRARY THING

My Library Thingy

This might come in handy! I would really like to do this for all our videos/DVDs! We can never remember if we have one or not!
This wasn't hard, but not sure what else I'm suppose to do so I'm going to go cut my dogs tangled hair.
I've been knitting a lot and loving it. I take them to school and someone see me and buys it. I make just enough to buy more yarn and junior Whataburger meal.

I went through a ton of these and I don't want to do that. I really liked Leah's SOUP but found something else.

On to the next assignment.

SKATELAND PREMIER NIGHT

SKATELAND PICTURES

The gorgeous guy in the blue plaid shirt and (sometimes) gray scarf is my son, Tony.

The "older guy" in gray shirt is next to a red-headed woman" Brett Cullen and Melinda McGraw. Been in the business for years- you'll probably recognize them.

Young guy, black shirt open to white Tshirt, jeans, hands in pocket is AJ Buckely. He's a regular on CSI NY and is the nicest young man. Maybe I'm old enough to be his grandmother, but he treated me very nicely!

Let it snow

This is Park City, UT during the Sundance Film Festival. I was NOT cold because I had on many layers. Luckily, everyone looks fat there because of thermal underwear. . . .

RSS Feeds - Stuff I'll never read

I will look at WOOT. I got my robo-vac from there and he and I are good friends. He even made friends with my dog.

I will NOT show my husband how to do this, because divorce is messy. Murder is easier. He would LOVE this and he'd never take out the trash or scratch my back or feed the dog.

My feeds are on the side. I used a gadget to put them there. If you see anything great, let me know!

I can do all things through Christ, who strenthens me.

Nehemiah rebulit the wall around Jerusalem in 53 days. I will try to last with this for that long!

I was ever reminded about God's sovereignty while at Park City. As proud as we are of Tony, his choice of life style and many of his choices, cut us to the quick. But God is good. We met 2 sets of parents, parents of the the exec. producer & one of the stars and parents of one of the assistant producers. All of us are Bible believing, going-to-church-every-Sunday folks who love our children deeply. The Gilleys, from Houston, even led a prayer before dinner-holding hands around the table- at a fancy restaurant. yes! So now we know that there are many people praying for our kids. I know our Sunday school class is and there are some mighty prayer warriors there. So, I'm keeping the faith.

This morning we had a quest preacher. He is Dennis Swanberg - Christian pastor and now entertainer. He has a TV show, too. He and Garry were in the same dorm, same hall at Baylor and even did revivals together. He's hilarious, but more than that, reminds us about the love of God and what's expected of us. Dennis talked about how much Jesus loves us. He loves us MORE than our mothers do and He know soooo much more about us than our mothers do - and still loves us!

I have laundry to do and I'd like to rest a few minutes. RSS will have to wait for another day. . .
because He lives

Oops, not first post

Who am I? I'm someone who HATES to write. Totally. I've taught for 11 years and loved it. Hated teaching writing, too, but at least I could tell them they COULD DO IT even when you hate it.

Garry is a hospice chaplain. Takes a special person to do this. He can be special when he tries!

Alex and Andrew are in Denton. Not in school. Both working at restaurants.
Tony (Anthony Burns) is still in Park City, UT at the Sundance film festival. We were there for 3 days this week. 5 1/2 ft. of snow a few days before we arrived. Looks just like all those National Geographic pictures you see! Wore lots of clothes and very busy. If you're interested, Google Skateland Anthony Burns. Lots of articles and reviews. Use "options" and go to last week or 24 hrs.

What will I get out of this? A headache? Migraine? If you are a facebook friend, you'll know I check in 1-2 times a month. Not a computer-watcher-reader kind of person.

It will be nice to know more of what is being talked about in this Web 2.0 that's always mentioned at conferences!

Great Window!
